Stephen Whitham Obituary

Stephen Erwin “Whit” Whitham, 63, longtime resident of Andover, CT, passed away unexpectedly on September 19, 2021, at Hartford Hospital.

Stephen was born in Manchester, CT on January 31, 1958, and raised in Bolton, CT.  He was a graduate of East Catholic High School in 1976 where he was well known for his high achievements as a star athlete on the track and football teams.  He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, receiving an honorable discharge on November 16, 1980.  He attended Ratcliffe School of Agriculture at UCONN, graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Plant Science.  He was self-employed as a landscaper and stone mason, leaving his legacy behind with many beautiful stone walks and walls throughout local Connecticut towns.  Eventually he joined the family business, Whitham Nursery, on Route 6 in Bolton.

Stephen had a very unique and sometimes mischievous personality, however one of his greatest attributes was his compassionate heart towards others in need.  If ever approached by anyone needing a favor or assistance, he never refused.  He had a knack for making children of all ages laugh, and his story-telling tangents often left people a little perplexed by the final ending!  Stephen’s pastimes were riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, shooting pool with his buddies, hunting, fishing and sitting for hours in his tranquil backyard amongst the sights and sounds of nature. His most cherished and treasured memories were of his children growing up, and the times spent with his loyal, beloved dogs who were a true tribute to the phrase “Man’s best friend.”

Many thanks to Patrick, one of Stephen’s most recent friends. Thank you for your watchful eye and willingness to help Stephen during his last challenging years.

Stephen is survived by his father, John Erwin Whitham of Vernon, CT; his children Shannon Evergreen “Ever” Whitham and her husband Shaun Rahder and granddaughter Zoe of Wichita Falls, TX; his son Seth Erwin Whitham and wife Kimberly and granddaughter Arabella of Tulsa, OK; his sister Tina Whitham of Vernon, CT; his uncle Edward Zawistowski and wife Harriet of Manchester, CT; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Stephen was predeceased by his mother Sally-Ann (Zawistowski) Whitham.

When recently asked what he’d most like to be doing, Stephen replied, “Go fishing.”

May you rest in peace, Stephen.  We hope you’re happily fishing.
