Shirley Potter Obituary

Shirley Gigle Potter peacefully passed on December 31, 2020 and joined the love of her life and husband Warren L. Potter, in Heaven. Born December 13th, 1932 to John W. Gigle and Minnie Jondro Gigle in Hartford, CT; where she resided until she married Warren in 1953. They made Bolton, CT their home and raised their family there.

During Shirley's times of employment while raising her family, she worked at S&H Green Stamps, Savings Bank of Manchester as a Bank Manager, H&R Block as a tax preparer and was a Voter Registrar for the town of Bolton. Shirley was also employed as the Church Secretary for Bolton Congregational Church in Bolton, CT for ten years, in the same church she and Warren raised their children. She did numerous volunteer jobs with the church: fairs, craft groups, potluck dinners, fundraising for missionary projects and teaching Sunday School. She joined the Ladies Quilting Club making numerous quilts for raffle prizes and a quilt for each of her children. While her children were growing up, she became involved in Girl Scouts, being a Brownie Leader and then a Girl Scout Leader while her daughters were members.

Once Shirley and Warren retired, they purchased The Doe Cottage in Ocean Park Maine in 1983. She became fondly known as "The Pie Lady" as she baked numerous pies for the weekly gathering of the guests and neighbors. She was always dabbling in new pie recipes and giving pies as "kindness pies" to her neighbors and local businesses. The Doe Cottage was filled with new-found friends that became life-long friends from Canada and across the United States for 34 years. She greeted and welcomed every guest with friendship, respect and love, always making them feel part of her family. Shirley never met a stranger, stopping to talk with anyone: at the beach, the Post Office, grocery store, church or in restaurants. She spoke with them like she had known them for years.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents John and Minnie Gigle, her husband Warren L. Potter, her sister Jeanne Miller, and her grandson Justin Daugherty. Shirley also leaves behind her "forever daughters'', Lisa Potter and Shelby Robson.

Shirley leaves behind five children and their spouses - David and Joanne Potter, Beverly and George Rose, Steven and Cindy Potter, Leslee Potter, and Alan and Heidi Potter. She also leaves behind two sisters and a brother, Reverend Beryl Capewell, Norma Hart and John Gigle, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Shirley was blessed with 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. She cherished spending time with them: baking cookies, doing crafts and vacationing.

A memorial service is being planned for Memorial Day weekend, May 2021, in Ocean Park, Maine. Memorial Day was always a big celebration weekend for the Potter family. Family and friends will be celebrating both Shirley's and Warren's lives at that time with a service and dedication of a new plaque on Warren's beach side bench. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Shirley to Ocean Park Association, Ocean Park, Maine.
