Norma Snelgrove Obituary

Norma Snelgrove, age 93, passed away December 21, 2018. She suffered declining health for several years, and in the end went thankfully to join her brothers, parents, cousins and many friends in the everlasting life promised by God. Norma grew up in Bristol and Plainville. She graduated from Plainville High School early and first in her class. She had excellent business and secretarial skills, which eventually led to her employment with Graham and Associates, where she worked her way up to the position of office manager. It was there that she met the love of her life, Ed Snelgrove, to whom she was married for almost 61 years. After several years at home raising children, Norma returned to work part-time at G. Fox and Company at the newly opened Meriden Square Mall. Several years later, she established her own business, Norma’s Yarn Shop, in Berlin, which she owned and operated for over twenty years. Norma was highly skilled in most types of needlework, and she enjoyed many years of selling yarn and needlework supplies, and teaching many people how to knit, crochet, needlepoint, cross stitch, hook rugs, and make tatted lace. Many of her regular customers became friends who would sit in the shop and socialize while they worked on their projects. They especially appreciated her finishing work skills, and continued to call on her for help with their projects several years after she retired. Before her health declined, Norma enjoyed bowling, swimming, and especially playing golf at Timberlin Golf Course. She also loved to play bridge, and took water aerobics classes at the New Britain Y for several years. She was an active member of Berlin Congregational Church, where she volunteered in various capacities over many years. Norma lived in Berlin for 52 years before she and Ed moved to Manchester to live near their daughter. She is survived by her husband Edwin Snelgrove, sons Michael Casey, Edwin Snelgrove Jr., and Andrew Snelgrove, a daughter Elizabeth Zownir and her husband Thomas, grandchildren Shannon Watson and her husband Colby, Colleen Casey, Stephanie Zownir, and Andrew Zownir, and great grandchildren Casey Watson, Noah Watson, and Shiloh Watson. A service to celebrate Norma’s life will be held in the spring; the time and location will be announced at a later date. Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, Manchester has care of the arrangements.
