Mildred McNeill Berggren (Jan 21, 1928 - Jun 4, 2021)
Millie passed away peacefully at home, with her family by her side, after a sudden and brief illness. She was born in Manchester to Robert and Rachel (Smith) McNeill. She was a 1946 graduate of Manchester High School. Before marrying, Millie worked as a telephone operator in Hartford and also for the Water Department for the Town of Manchester. When she married in 1950, she and her husband Ed built their own house in Tolland, and had many adventures riding their Harley motorcycle and going to Broadway shows in NYC. Millie and Ed raised three children. When their children were older, Millie worked as the manager of the Highland Park and Verplank Elementary School cafeterias in Manchester. The students referred to the cafeteria as "Mill's Diner".
In retirement, Millie and Ed continued their adventurous lifestyle by making a total of 37 trips to Walt Disney World in Florida as well as to other places in the US. When Millie got her first smart phone, she became an expert at texting, which became one of her favorite hobbies. Most of all, Millie enjoyed the simple pleasures of a hot cup of tea and watching the cardinals at her back yard feeders.
She is pre-deceased by her son, Noel, and by her brothers and sisters Mary Suhie, Bertha Balmer, Florence Hilinski, Gladys Wolfram, Ernest McNeill, and George McNeill. She is survived by her husband of 71 years Ed, her son Neill, her daughter Nancy, and many nieces and nephews.
Millie's family would like to sincerely thank the nurses and staff at ECHN Visiting Nurse & Health Services, whose tremendous compassion and support made all our lives easier during Millie's last few days with us.
