The angels were calling. JEANNE GIFFIN WRIGHT, 85, of Manchester, CT passed away December 25, 2023. Jeanne was raised in upstate New York in St. Regis Falls. She graduated early from St. Lawrence University Suma Cum Laude with a degree in Mathematics. In June 1961 she married her best friend and partner for life Richard H. Wright and moved to Manchester, CT. They were married for 55+ years until his passing on November 11, 2016 (Veterans Day).
Jeanne and Dick lived their adult/married life in Manchester, raised their 3 children, and were active fans of “all things Manchester”. Frequently seen around town on their morning walks you couldn’t miss them, Jeanne at 5’2” and Dick at 6’4”. As their mom, Jeanne’s 3 children never had to worry as school pickups/drop offs were always done; doctor’s appointments were always made and kept; food and drink were always in the fridge; and a helping, loving hand was always there when needed.
Jeanne’s talents and involvement in her community went beyond her family: Waddell School PTA, bake sales, plant sales; kids summer swimming lessons; made handmade Manchester HS athletic banners marking CCIL championships; Manchester Police Dept. citizens academy training; tax processor at H&R Block in the Manchester Parkade; worked part time at Bennet Jr. HS and Cheney Technical HS; 50+ year member of St. Bridget Church community (played the organ, made handmade religious banners for the church alter); 35+ year member Manchester Square Dance Club (served as President and Vice-President for many years with Dick); member of the Manchester Racquet Club (ran a women’s tennis group and subbed for the men); member Manchester Art Association; participated in Center Memorial Park Art in the Park; 2013 inductee Manchester Arts Commission Arts Hall of Fame; participated in the “Great JOY A Christmas Musical” put on by the Trinity Covenant Church Celebration Choir; exceptional seamstress that made curtains, quilts/blankets, pillows, scarves, mittens, hats, and could alter almost anything. MASTER fixer of anything sewing and knitting! Crocheted plastic bags into tote bags to save the planet!
Jeanne was a simple person by nature and always thankful for what she had vs what she did not. She loved the outdoors and was a “tomboy” at heart. As a member of the Hockanum River Trail Committee, she spent several of her later years walking the trails, picking up sticks, raking the leaves, and making the walkways safe and clean for others to enjoy. We always said “you can take the girl out of St. Regis Falls, but you can’t take St. Regis Falls out of the girl”.
Jeanne battled Alzheimer’s for 7 years and although it may have impacted her ability to communicate and walk, she did not let it define her. Small but mighty, and not understanding what was happening to her, she fought to maintain her independence, dignity and self-respect with every cell in her little body. Jeanne’s legacy lives on in the lessons she taught us, the blankets that warm us, the pillows that cushion the blow, and the paintings hung in our homes that represent “all things Manchester” including her love, pride, and joy for community and family. We never had to worry, she was always there for us. We love you Mom!
A huge “thank you for everything” to Apple Rehab Colchester, CT and Masonicare Home Health & Hospice, Mystic, CT. Wonderful, caring staff that took our worries away.
