Janet (Bates) Chapman, 96, of Manchester, peacefully passed away at her home on Friday, June 9, 2023. Surrounded by her daughter, Linda Custer, and granddaughter, Christy Custer, Janet joined her late husband, Alexander Chapman, in eternal rest. She was born on August 8, 1926, in New Haven to George and Florence Bates. Janet was preceded in death by her brother George Bates Jr. and adopted brother John Canlon.
Janet was a devout woman with unwavering faith in God and was a member of St. Bartholomew Church. She found great joy in spending time with her family and enjoyed time spent by the water. She was an avid reader and had a talent for knitting, in which she handmade countless gifts and prayer shawls. Those closest to her experienced her silly side and her love for laughter. Throughout her employment years, she worked at W.T. Grant's and Manchester Memorial Hospital in outpatient services.
Janet and Alexander were blessed with three children: the late Robert Chapman, survived by his wife Marion; David Chapman and his late wife Lois; and Linda Custer and her late husband Ronald. Janet also leaves behind six grandchildren: the late Daniel Chapman, Rebecca Chapman, David Chapman Jr. (Melissa Beckers), Amber O'Keefe (Jeremy O'Keefe), Brendan Chapman, and Christy Custer. She also leaves behind four great-grandchildren: Annabell and Saoirse Chapman; and Charlie and Theodore O'Keefe.
Fondly referred to as "Grammie" by her family, Janet will be deeply missed. However, they hold onto the comforting hope and truth of all being reunited together in God's eternal glory one day. A graveside service will be held on July 10th at 11am at East Cemetery, located at 220 E. Center St in Manchester.
