Glenn Griswold Obituary

Glenn Oliver Griswold, 93, of Manchester, CT, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at Salmon Brook Rehab and Nursing Center where he had been residing for the past couple of years after a severe stroke. Glenn was born May 19, 1927 in Bridgeport, CT, the son of the late Harold V. Griswold and Olive Mae Percy. He grew up in Andover, CT with his maternal grandparents and lived the majority of his adult life in Manchester. Glenn joined the US Navy in the Seabees Unit right out of high school in 1945 and was stationed in the South Pacific during WWII. Following the war Glenn joined the Metal, Wood and Lathing trade in Washington, DC and then Hartford Local 78 for 28 years. He then worked for the State of Connecticut at Howell Cheney Technical High School as the head of maintenance until he retired in 1992.

Glenn was a huge sports guy. He was a life-long NY Yankees fan, enjoyed the UCONN women’s basketball and loved football. He was a coach for the Manchester Little League, the Lawyers, years ago. In retirement he became an avid reader. He also started golfing later in life, and having found his passion he continued until he was 85, but refused to start from the women’s tee so that ended his golfing career. He actually made a hole in one in September 2000 at Twin Hills Country Club. Glenn was a good friend of Bill W. for 32 years and it saved his life.

He was predeceased by his wife, Doris Lillian McFarland in 2007 after 57 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his sisters-in-law and their spouses Marion and Charles Chaponis of South Windsor, CT, Margorie and Arthur Highter of Bolton, CT, a cousin Evelyn Donahue of Manchester, CT, his daughter-in-law Gertrude Griswold of New Hampshire and a sister Barbara Hammond of South Norwalk, CT.

Glenn is survived by his children Glenn J. Griswold of Nottingham, NH, Dawn L. Griswold of Manchester, CT, Thomas (Anne) Griswold of Manchester, CT, Tammy (Nathan) Primus of Southington, CT, Donald (Gail) Griswold of Tolland, CT. He is also survived by sister-in-law Faith McKenna and Michael Baldt of Manchester, CT, and a very special niece, Stacia McKenna McPherson of Old Lyme, CT. Nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many cousins. Also, a dear friend Lisa Whatmore of Bolton, CT, and a special friend, Janice Coogan who kept him in line at the nursing home. The family would like to thank Kingsley, Vensi, Sadie, Liz and Tonya for their care and compassion they showed our father through his stay at Salmon Brook.
