Alexce Wilfred Benoit, Jr., 82, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2023 at Manchester Memorial Hospital, his fight with cancer coming to a peaceful and painless end. He is survived by Linda, his devoted and loving wife of 56 years; their four children – Robert, Michael, Janet & Kathy; as well as his sons-in-law Scott and Nick, his daughter-in-law Dawn, and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Born in Springfield, MA to Christina and Alexce Sr., Alex (or Al or Skipper) was the youngest brother of Norman and Charles. He was a proud Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1962, where he packed parachutes, lifeguarded, competitively swam, and lived in Hawaii, Guam, and California. He spent his civilian life working first in the Vernon Public Schools as a custodian, serving in the local union leadership, and then at ABA-PGT in their shipping department.
He will be remembered by many for his quiet and steadfast nature but also for a quick sense of humor laced with mischief and charm. He loved the outdoors, was a dedicated reader of history and science, and enjoyed woodworking as well as travel. He ate popcorn practically daily, saw every sci-fi or action movie he could, and seemed impossibly tall. He dedicated much of his life to the caretaking of his family, along with a few beloved dogs who he never would admit to wanting.
Friends and family are welcome to visit during calling hours on Friday, April 21 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester CT 06040. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Joseph’s Church, 33 West St., Rockville, CT 06066, followed by a burial service at Buckland Cemetery, 1210 Tolland Turnpike, Manchester, CT 06042.
