William 'Jim' James Skinner

October 22, 1930 — May 1, 2023

William James Skinner passed away on May 1st, 2023 at age 92. Known as "Jim" to family and "Bill" to colleagues, Bill was born in Gloucester, MA to Stella N. (Alcock) and Louis H. Skinner, Sr. A graduate of New Bedford High School, Bill joined the US Air Force at age 17. After serving 4 years during the Korean War, he joined the Massachusetts National Guard and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Activated for The Cuban Missile Crisis and The Vietnam War, Bill was promoted to Captain and awarded the Bronze Star and Arms Commendation medals, among other awards. Bill later moved to Connecticut and served in the CT National Guard until retiring as a Major after 21 years of service. Bill went on to work for Aetna Life Insurance for 22 years, retiring as Asst. Director in 1991. Bill was an ardent golfer and played in several leagues including his favorite - Twin Hills Golf Course. Besides his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother Austin and sister Kathleen Price. He is survived by his brother Louis Jr. of Barnstable, MA, sister Stella Barbato of Valle Crucis, NC and a multitude of adoring nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He will be missed for his quick wit, intelligence, and sharp sense of humor. Calling Hours will be held at Holmes Watkins Funeral Home located at 400 Main Street, Manchester CT 06040 on Tuesday, May 9th from 9:30am till 11am. Burial to follow at East Cemetery located at 220 East Center Street, Manchester CT 06040 at 11:30am with Military Honors. Donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project and/or the Disabled American Veterans.
