William F. Mullen, 90, of Manchester, beloved husband of Norma L. (Wyrus) Mullen for 52 years passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 17, 2018 on Father's Day. He was born on April 2, 1928 in Manchester, son of the late William F. (Frank) Sr. and Sarah (Strain) Mullen. Bill was raised in Manchester, attended local schools and was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1946. He was a proud US Army veteran having served in Korea 1946-1947. Bill was employed for over 20 years as an Insurance Agent for the John Hancock Life Insurance Company, after which he spent 30 years in the R.V. industry. Following his retirement Bill was a crossing guard for the Town of Manchester on Keeney Street. He was a member for over 55 years of Manchester Lodge 73 A.F. & A.M. and served as the Chaplain for Washington L.O.L 117. In his earlier years Bill was active with Cub Scout Pack 143 and Boy Scout Troop 47. In addition to his wife Norma, he leaves four children; the Rev. Dr. David Mullen and his spouse Marsha of Manchester, Jeffrey Mullen and his spouse Linda of Manchester, Ronald Mullen of Coventry and Sara Donlon and her spouse Thomas of Columbia, three step-children; William Haberern and his spouse Susan of Vernon, Betty Ann Smith and her spouse Reed of Houston, TX and John Haberern and his spouse Tia of Litchfield, fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. In addition to his parents Bill was predeceased by his sister Edna Penny and step-daughter Carolyn Merkle. Also, the family would like to thank Monica Downer for her devotion and care during his final weeks. Calling hours will be held at Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main St. in Manchester on Thursday, June 21, 2018 from 5-8 pm with a Masonic Service to be held at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be celebrated on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 11 am at South United Methodist Church, 1226 Main St. Manchester. Burial with Military honors will follow in East Cemetery, Manchester.
