Wilfred G. ''Wil'' Douglas

Wilfred G. "Wil" Douglas, 86, of Manchester, beloved husband of Joan (Rodger) Douglas, died early, Wednesday morning, January 27, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital with family at his side. Wil was born February 25, 1929 in Manchester, son of the late William & Marie (Forbes) Douglas, who came to this country from Northern Ireland in the early 1920's. He attended local schools and was a 1947 Graduate of Manchester High School. Following high school he joined the National Guard. During the Korean Conflict his unit was federalized and sent to Germany. Wil worked for the Connecticut Natural Gas Company (formerly the Hartford Gas Company) for 37 years as a service supervisor before retiring in 1989. In retirement he worked part-time for Holmes and Watkins Funeral Home for more than 20 years. Wil was a Mason and member of Friendship Tuscan Lodge # 145 A.F. & A.M. He was a Scottish Rite Shriner and member of the Sphinx Shrine Temple of Hartford, as well as a member of the Royal Order of Jester's Hartford Court # 141. For over 30 years he marched and played tenor and bass drum for the Sphinx Highlanders Bagpipe Band. He was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge and the Washington Social Club. He was a member of the Manchester Square Dance Club for over 20 years. He was a member of the Army & Navy Club of Manchester and the Korean War Veteran's Assoc.. Wil was a lifelong, active and faithful member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Manchester. In addition to his loving wife Joan of 65 years, he is survived by his son, Hon. Wayne R. Douglas and his wife Valerie R. Landry of Ocean Park, ME., his daughter Robin D. Martocci and her husband Paul M. Martocci of Manchester, three grandchildren, William S. Douglas of Portland, ME., Tica J. Douglas of Brooklyn, NY and McKenzie M. Clark of Manchester. Other survivors include his two nephews, Mark Runde of South Windsor and Chris Runde and his wife Paula of Rocky Hill, as well as his cousin Maureen (Douglas) Carey of Dungannon, Northern Ireland and numerous other relatives in Northern Ireland. Funeral services will be held Monday February 1, 2016 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 41 Park St., Manchester. Burial with Military Honors will be in the East Cemetery in Manchester. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 3-6 PM at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St. Manchester.
