Walter William Simmers, 66, of Vernon and formerly of Manchester, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died suddenly on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Walter was born March 4, 1948, in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Robert and Lillian (Gremlich) Simmers. He spent his childhood in both Philadelphia and Manchester, graduating from Manchester High School in 1966.
Walter earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. He then married the love of his life, Penny Taylor, and entered the U.S. Navy, serving under Admiral Hyman G. Rickover in Washington, DC, during the Vietnam War. Walter also earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia in 1979. At the time of his passing, he was a partner at the law firm McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, LLP.
In addition to his work, Walter was a dedicated volunteer in the community, including in church, youth, statewide, and local organizations. In particular, he served for many years as a member of the Vernon Town Council, a board member of the Biomedical Engineering Alliance & Consortium (BEACON), and a member of UConn Health Center's Institutional Review Board.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Penny, to whom he was married for 41 years.
Walter is survived by daughter Jillian S. Goad and her husband Ryan of Vernon; daughter Kara E. Simmers also of Vernon; and son Michael B. Simmers and his wife Christian of Charlottesville, VA. He is also survived by four treasured grandchildren: Charlie Goad, Lilly Kate Simmers, Ann Elise Simmers, and Charlotte Grace Simmers. Other survivors include his brother Robert Simmers and his wife Sherrie of Medford, NJ; brother-in-law Robert Taylor and his wife Katherine of Portland, CT; sister-in-law Patricia Nowick and her husband David of Broken Arrow, OK; sister-in-law Ann Franzi and her husband David of Chazy, NY; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 5 - 8 PM at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center St., Manchester. Burial with military honors will be private in the East Cemetery in Manchester. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 8, 2014, at 11:30 AM at Center Congregational Church, 11 Center St., Manchester.
