Ruth M. Smith

Ruth Myrtle (Ridge) Smith, age 92 of Manchester, died Thursday, June 12, 2014 at her home. She was the widow of Roland J. Smith, whom she met during World War II, married, and had a wonderful life together.
Ruth was born in North Tiverton, RI May 18, 1922, daughter of Albert and Emily (Rateliffe) Ridge. She graduated from BMC Durfee High School in 1942 and celebrated her 70th class reunion in 2012. She has been a resident of Manchester since 1955 and retired from the JM Ney Co. of Bloomfield in 1960 after 25 years of service.
Ruth volunteered at Manchester Memorial Hospital for 25 years and was treasurer of the Windsor Giant Midget Football Program until 1988. She and her husband were both honored to have their names on the awards given to the boys and girls in the football program.
She is survived by her son, Everett R. Smith of Windsor; three grandchildren, Brian K. Smith, James Engle, and Kimberly Bulgajewski; ten great-grandchildren, Everett, Brian, and Krystyna Smith, Morgan, James II, and Dylan Engle, and Raymond, Eric, Adam, and Abby Bulgajewski; brother-in-law John Woodman, sisters-in-law Shirley Loper and Irene Darr, all of Michigan, who gave her a special family life, and her faithful cat Tiggy who was always at her side.
Besides her husband, Ruth was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Sheila Smith, a sister, Pauline Ridge, a brother, Russell Lincoln Ridge, a brother-in-law Thomas Woodman, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Bosoven.
Visiting hours are Thursday, June 19, from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester, with a funeral service at 7 PM. Private burial will be in the East Cemetery in Manchester. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
