Russell G. Philbrick

Russell G. Philbrick, Sr. of Manchester, CT went home to the Lord on the evening of September 30, 2017 at age 97.
Mr. Philbrick was born in 1920 in Plaistow, NH and shortly moved to a farm near Epsom, NH where his childhood years were spent. The family later moved to Kingston, NH. Mr. Philbrick served in the US Navy during WWII, first as a gunnery instructor at Dam Neck, VA and from 1944 on as a Gunners Mate 1st Class on the newly commissioned Battleship USS Wisconsin BB-64. Having earned its 5th Battle Star for operations against Japan, Wisconsin anchored in Tokyo Bay on 5 September 1945, three days after the Japanese surrender. He was part of an early landing party securing the naval base at Yokosuka, Japan.
After returning home from the war he began a family and initially worked as a truck driver. He then became a partner, and eventually the sole owner, of Philbrick Oldsmobile in Exeter, NH. In 1958, Mr. Philbrick moved to Manchester, CT and, with his wife Roberta, started the Philbrick Agency - Real Estate & Insurance. This successful business grew and prospered into the 1990's, when he began winding it down as he entered semi-retirement. He ultimately closed the business in his early 90's.
Mr. Philbrick was a 32nd degree Mason. He at one time served on the board of directors of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and served from time to time in various churches in Manchester. He served on the Manchester Board of Realtors for many years, two as President.
Mr. Philbrick lived independently until late 2014, when he took residence with a son & daughter-in-law and recently moved into Vernon Manor where he passed of natural causes.
He is survived by two daughters: Joellen Miller of Douglas, GA and Terry Philbrick of Mystic, CT. Four sons and daughters-in-law: Russell Jr. & Candace of Flagler Beach, FL; Paul & Lisa of Vernon, CT; Robert & Sharon and Raymond & Pamela, all of Manchester. There are 15 grandchildren, 10 with spouses; and 16 great-grandchildren and counting.

A Memorial service will be held at Trinity Covenant Church, 302 Hackmatack St., Manchester, CT on Saturday November 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be a private ceremony at a future date.
