Roger B. Cottle, 84, of Manchester, beloved husband of the late Dorothy June (Talbot) Cottle, died peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 19, 1932 in Norwalk, CT, son of the late Barnard and Evelyn Cottle. Roger was raised in the Rowayton section of Norwalk, graduating with the Norwalk High School Class of 1950. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut College of Agriculture in 1954. After being commissioned as an Air Force Reserve Officer in 1954 upon graduation from UConn, Roger served on active duty from 1955 to 1959, including a deployment in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1969 at the rank of Captain. Roger worked for more than fifty years as a construction estimator and project manager. For the last decade, he worked for Stonehedge Landscaping Company in Newington. Roger continued his work there until only two weeks before his passing. Roger joined the Manchester Camp of Gideons International in 1980, and at the time of his passing he was serving as Vice President of the Camp. As part of his work with the Gideons, he shared testimonies with many churches. For the last decade, Roger has been a member of the Union Congregational Church in Rockville, enthusiastically participating in the church's project to help address the needs of a community in Senegal. Roger had a distinguished career in Scouting. As a Boy Scout in Norwalk, Roger earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was a Quartermaster in the Sea Scouts. Roger served as a Scoutmaster during his Air Force deployment in the Philippines and continued to hold leadership roles through his sons' time as members of Troop 880 in South Windsor. Roger's long service to Scouting was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award in 1982. Roger was active in the civic life of South Windsor for many years. He served in several roles with the town government, and was active in the Republican Party. Roger is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law: Paul and Tracey Cottle of Tallahassee, FL; Stephen and Laura Cottle of Storrs; and, Jonathan and Darlene Cottle of Austin, TX. He is also survived by his brother Owen Cottle and his wife Betty of Fishkill, NY, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents he was predeceased by his sister Barbara Aldrich. A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 10:00 am at the Union Congregational Church, 3 Elm St. Rockville, CT 06066. Burial will be private in Wapping Cemetery, South Windsor. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Manchester Camp of Gideons International.
