Richmond Perley

December 12, 1926 — October 3, 2018

Richmond (Dick) Perley, 92, of Glastonbury, CT, loving husband of the late Alice Elizabeth Perley for 67 years, passed peacefully on October 3, 2018 after a long and happy life.
A Mayflower descendant, Dick was born in Port Washington, NY on December 12, 1926, son of George Kimball Perley and Ruth Adelaine Richmond, and brother of Kimball Perley and Pauline Perley. He graduated from Port Washington High School and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Science (1949) and a Master of Science (1951) in Electrical Engineering. His undergraduate years were interrupted for two and a half years by service in the United States Navy during WWII in the South Pacific. Dick worked at Pratt & Whitney, Hamilton Standard, and Kaman Aircraft on jet engine design, Apollo mission moon suits, hurricane monitoring instruments, electromagnetic tank guns, and windmill power generation.
In 1988 he was honored by the General Assembly of Connecticut for more than 20 years of outstanding service to the town of Glastonbury as a member of the Housing Board of Appeals, Board of Tax Review, Chairman of the Republican Town Committee, Chairman of the Board of Education, member of a Charter Revision Committee, member of the Town Council, and the Strategic Planning Committee.
An avid hiker, Dick was recognized as a member of the Northeast 4000 footers club in 1973 after having climbed 111 mountains in New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and New York. In his later years he walked the beaches of Naples, FL and Orleans, MA. A gregarious man with a sense humor, he organized neighborhood water association block parties in Glastonbury, a 250th anniversary of the United States celebration in his Orleans neighborhood, and many other events.
Richmond is survived by his daughter Betsy Ann Preble, son Christopher Robin Perley, daughter Susan Elizabeth Brenton, their spouses, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
