Richard Ernest Spencer, 86, beloved husband of the recently deceased Charlotte (Moran) Spencer, of East Windsor CT, formerly of Manchester CT, went to join her and his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 13, 2015. He was born February 8, 1929 to John and Beatrice (Clark) Spencer in Providence RI. Richard lived in Riverside and Cranston, RI before moving to Georgiaville, RI at the age of 7. He worked at Providence Lying-In Hospital during High School and at age 17 moved to Auburn, MA and attended Worcester Jr. College. He built a house in Millbury, MA and lived there from 1950 to 1959. From 1960 to 1962 he resided at Concord, NH and Beacon Falls, CT before eventually settling in Manchester, CT in 1963, where he remained with his family. In 2004 Richard made his final residence in East Windsor, CT. During his employment years, Richard worked for Seaboard Finance Co. and served as a Manager with branches in many New England states. He later worked at several financial institutions including Connecticut Bank and Trust, starting their credit card program; Guaranty Bank as Vice Treasurer; before entering sales and becoming an award winning salesperson for the Schwaab Stamp company due to his affinity for working with the public. Richard joined the DeMolay as a young man, later became a Mason with the Olive Branch Lodge A.F. & A.M. and was an active member for over 60 years. Later, Richard was very active in Boy Scouts, becoming Scoutmaster of Troop 123 in Manchester, CT for more than 20 years, and was a positive influence in many young lives. During this time he made 3 ten day backpacking expeditions with scout members to the Philmont Scout Ranch in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of the Rockies. His defining moment was marrying Charlotte Moran in 1973 and was deeply committed to her throughout their marriage and especially as she suffered from the effects of Alzheimer's disease in her final years. His fulfilled commitment was to live just "one more day" than she. His devotion was complete and absolute. He was a member of Ellington Congregational Church in Ellington, CT. Richard is survived by his sons, David Spencer and his wife Lisa of Winter Haven, FL, Donald Spencer and his fianc Sue Garafano of East Windsor, CT, Stepson Rusty Turner and his wife Linda of Manchester, CT, and Stepdaughter Lori-Bea Turner of Manchester, CT. Granddaughter Stephanie and Greg Masone of Pearland, TX and their children Story and Fable. Grandsons Jesse Spencer of Davenport, FL, Jason Spencer of Providence, RI, Nicholas Spencer of Manchester, CT, James Spencer of Winter Haven, FL, Step granddaughters Jillian Irish and her significant other, Michael, Kari Turner and her significant other, Tim, Jennifer Irish and Kristin Turner. He also is survived by his former daughter in-law Suzanne Spencer of Pearland, TX, and his spiritual brother Alvin Moran and his predeceased wife Margie of Albuquerque, NM, with whom he shared many wonderful times. Funeral services will be held Saturday July 18, 2015 at 9:00 AM at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center St., Manchester. Burial will be in the East Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday from 5-7 at the funeral home with a Masonic service at 7:00 PM.
