He came home and married his sweetheart, Alice Marie Safford, on May 5, 1957. Nick worked at Vic's pizza for over 20 years and retired from the United Postal Service. He belonged to all the social clubs in Manchester, was a lifetime member and past commander of the VFW, and worked as a bartender at the Washington Social Club for many years. Nick loved to be around people, especially to socialize, play cards or watch sports at the local bar. He especially loved the Yankees, New York Giants, Whalers Hockey team and his all-time favorite, Uconn Womens Basketball Team. Nick loved playing baseball as a young man. We took several family vacations to Cape Cod and to Florida and he often came with his buddies to visit his kids at the campgrounds. The family would like to give special thanks to the following: Mary and Bob, who were not only his landlords but also good friends who helped to watch over him. Best friends who Nick thought of as family, Peter and Luisa, who came weekly to bring Dad his favorite foods, Italian music, homemade goodies, and play setback. Barry, one of Nick's best friends visited weekly bringing him fresh vegetables from his garden. In is final days, Barry stopped in daily to chat and check in on him. Extra special thanks to Brenda and granddaughter, Nicole, for taking such tender, loving care of him. His children would also like to thank the village of people (too many to name) his nieces, nephews, son-in-law, grandchildren, and friends who gave their time so Nick could be at home until his final day. Without them all we could not have given Nick his wish to pass at home. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital in his name.
