Obituary

Maximino “Maxy” Echevarría Bermúdez

Maximino “Max” Echevarría Bermúdez, 70, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2026, with his children by his side, along with his sister, Eddie “Chavela” Echevarría, and Carmen Bermúdez Eldridge, who remained a caring and supportive presence. After a courageous battle with cancer, Max fought with strength and determination until the very end.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Max was the son of Dominga Bermúdez and José Echevarría. Puerto Rico held a special place in his heart throughout his life. He loved his island, its beaches, its music, and most importantly, the family and memories that connected him to home.

Max was a smart, charismatic, meticulous, and highly organized man with a natural talent for mathematics. He was someone who paid attention to details and took pride in doing things the right way!! He had a strong personality, a beautiful smile, and a stubbornness that those who loved him knew well and will always remember.

Max was happiest accomplishing the simplest daily tasks; all of which brought him joy. These included listening to salsa music, washing and caring for his car, playing dominoes, dice, and cards; and spending quality time at the beach. He was also a passionate baseball fan and was a proud New York Yankees fan.

An amazing baseball catcher himself, Max played softball in the New London league with Los Salseros. This part of his life that brought him great enjoyment and lasting memories. He served honorably in the US military representing the many Boricuas both on the island and abroad.

Above all else, Max was a family man. He loved nothing more than having his family together, whether here in Connecticut or on the island of Puerto Rico. Some of his favorite memories were made during family gatherings at the beach in Puerto Rico. He adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and took great pride in his family name.

Family unity meant a great deal to Max. He wanted his children and generations that followed to carry on the many traditions he established including staying connected, supporting one another, and coming together as one family. He took pride in knowing that his family would continue that tradition long after his passing.

Max will be remembered for his love of family, the deep admiration he had for his siblings, his Yankees pride, his bright smile, and unmistakable personality. He will also be remembered for the little things that made him who he was, including his familiar phrase, “Te voy a dar un cocotazo!”

Max is survived by Migdalia Benitez; Max will be deeply missed by his children: Maria Echevarría, Maximino Echevarría Jr., Yakira Echevarría, Celia Echevarría, Jorge Echevarría, and Veronica Echevarría. He is also survived by their spouses and significant others: Marcel Cort, Marysol Negrón Echevarría, Emigdio Díaz, Martin Alvarado, and Omayra Vázquez Rodriguez. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Evelyn Díaz Echevarría, Ruth Colón, Joshua Echevarría, John Wiedenheft V, Yamilet Echevarría, Miguel Rubert, Gian Rubert, Emigdio Díaz Echevarría Jr., Génesis Díaz Echevarría, Da'vian Butler, Yadiel Echevarría, Javen Cort, Yancel Echevarría, Jacob Echevarría, Jayren Echevarría, Leo Echevarría, Ayane Cruz, and Liani Echevarría. He was blessed to be a great-grandfather to Senai Díaz and Zayden Díaz Correa, who in particular brought him great joy. He will also be deeply missed by his siblings, extended family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

Max leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, family traditions, and love. His legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the generations that follow. Though he is no longer with us, the love he had for his family, and the importance he placed on keeping that family united, will remain with them forever.

Max may no longer be physically with us, but his spirit will forever remain within the hearts of the family he loved so deeply.

Fly high viejo...I love you! I love you! I love you! Our love for you will be everlasting!
