Maurice "RICK" Coltey, 64, of Manchester, CT gave his final good morning kiss to his wife Vivian, January 27, 2018. Rick was born June 15, 1953 to the late Peg (Fillmore) and Maurice Coltey Sr.
Rick grew up in East Hartford with his 3 brothers Dan, Mike and Scott. He married his first wife Kathy very young and they had 2 daughters, Kimberly and Natalie, who were the loves of his life. In 1974 he met Vivian and they were married on July 26, 1974. Rick was known for his love of animals, not just your conventional dogs and cats (although there were many) but his menagerie of exotic animals, his homes were always filled with plants and animals. His other passion were his tattoos, and he spent many hours at the tattoo parlors getting ink. Rick was proud of having participated in the first tattoo convention in Hartford.
On June 10, 2010 Rick was diagnosed with stage 4 Lung Cancer and shortly after Emphysema and COPD, which started his 7 and a half years journey. He started on a clinical trial at John DeQuatro Cancer center in Manchester, during the next couple of years he had various chemo treatments and radiation. They ran out of options and he moved on to Dana Farber in Boston where he did the PDL1 clinical trial for immunotherapy treatment. Rick had great success for about 9 months and once again it quit working, so he went back to Manchester for conventional treatment. He then started treatment at the Smilo Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Hospital, and was stable for about 3 and a half years until this Fall when a small nodule started again. While there were many ups and downs during these years we cannot say enough about the medical care that he received at all of the many medical facilities where he had treatment. The doctors and especially the nurses were amazing.
During his journey Rick continued to work at the same company (through many name changes) since 1973. He finally retired in 2017.
Along with his parents, Rick was predeceased by his brothers, Mike and Scott, and father-in-law, Dale Tower. Rick is survived by his wife of 42 years, Vivian (Tower) Coltey; daughter, Kimberly Coltey-Hagenow and her husband Chris with their children Sara, Joshua and Derek; daughter, Natalie Coltey and her significant other Bill Hayes and son Evan; brother, Dan Coltey and his daughters Jennifer (Brendon), Cassy (Mike) and Amanda (Ryan); nephew, Damien; mother-in-law, Joan Tower; brother-in-law, Brett Tower and his wife Debbie, and their children, Steven (Sarah), Ian, Rachel (Ryann) and Caleb. Rick also leaves his special cousin Patty Lemire and her husband Jason.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cancer charity of your choice or Healers with Halos, c/o Bolton Veterinary Hospital, 222 Boston Turnpike, Bolton, CT 06043.
