Mary Tweedie Kelley, 95 of Glastonbury, formerly of Manchester and Hebron passed away Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Brookdale Buckingham. Mary was born August 6, 1922 in Thorndike Maine, daughter of the late Coburn and Flora (Clark) Tweedie. She graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast Maine. She went to Connecticut in 1942 with a friend Mildred Rostedt and they worked for Pratt & Whitney Small Tool in West Hartford. Mary and Mildred joined the United States Navy in 1943. They went to Hunter College in New York for boot camp. Mary was in the motor pool and drove women officers to various destinations. She was also a secretary for the base commander and worked with people from Canada and England Army and Navy. While serving in the Navy, Mary was injured, spent two months in Bethesda Navy Hospital and was honorably discharged with a lifetime disability. In 1952 she married John D. Kelley. They had 60 happy years together. They enjoyed travelling by car for many of their vacations. They also took cruises in the Caribbean. John Passed away in 2011. Mary was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 17 Manchester and was the first woman commander in Connecticut. She was a member of Women of the Sea Services Unit 42, member American Legion Post 14 Rockville, Irish American Home Society of Glastonbury and a volunteer at the Rocky Hill Veterans Health Center. Mary was proud to be in many military parades with the WAVES in Manchester, Glastonbury, Middletown, Saybrook and Madison. She never forgot her life in the Navy and was always volunteering to help other veterans. Mary loved her UConn Huskies and enjoyed the casinos in Connecticut and Las Vegas. She is survived by her special daughter Mary Moriarty and her husband Dennis of East Falmouth, Massachusetts, grandson Christopher Moriarty and his wife Alexis Alloway of Bothell, WA, granddaughter Erin Colleen Moriarty of Seattle, WA and three nieces; Linda, Donna & Terri all of Maine. She was predeceased by a brother Ernest Tweedie. Calling hours will be held at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St. in Manchester on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 2-4 pm. Funeral services will be celebrated on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 10:30 am at the funeral home followed by burial with military honors in East Cemetery, Manchester.
