Marie Lillian Carlson

May 8, 1923 — June 14, 2016

Marie Lillian (Jenkins) Carlson, 93, of Manchester, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, from the White Oaks Retirement Community.
She was born May 8, 1923, in Somerville, Mass., to H. Allen and Lillian (Taylor) Jenkins. The second eldest of eight children, she graduated from Howe High School and, at age 19, married high school sweetheart Arthur Carlson in a double wedding with her older sister, Dorothy, and Bernard McDewell while Arthur and "Bud" were home on leave from the U.S. Navy.
Thus began a Navy odyssey for Marie and Arthur that took them to Idaho, Hawaii, California, Rhode Island, California again, and finally, Norfolk, Va., where they retired. They had been married for 51 years when Arthur passed away in August 1994. Marie continued to live in Norfolk, where she was active in the Church of God (Anderson), running the food pantry for many years.
In December 2010, she moved to Connecticut, where many members of her family live. She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Lynell) Johnson, of Manchester, a son, Larry (Gayle) Carlson, of Milton, Ga.; two sisters, Joan Lee and Joyce Swanson of Billerica, Mass.; grandchildren Tami Fagan of Wethersfield, Tracy (Kyle) Devine of Manchester, Tara (Ryan) Garbart of Tolland, Tiffany (Mike) Settino of Manchester, Zachary (Carie) Carlson and Kristen (Bram) DeWin, both of New Market, Md., Andrew (Alex) Carlson of Houston, Texas, and Benjamin Carlson of Milton, Ga.; and eight great - grandchildren, Zen, Zoe, Jack, Sam, Adele, Owen, Juliette, and Penny. She was predeceased by sisters Dorothy and Betty and brothers Warren, Eddie, and Allen.
Marie was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great - grandmother who always put family first. A devoted Christian, she prayed for all of us and supported us in countless ways. She will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Wapping Community Church in South Windsor. Donations in her memory may be made to The Salvation Army. To leave a message of condolence please visit www.holmes-watkinsfuneralhomes.com
