Lorraine "Lee" Behrend McKay, 93, died peacefully at home with family by her side on February 25, 2025. She was born January 15, 1932, in Manchester, the daughter of Joseph Behrend and Emily Wetherell Behrend.
Lorraine graduated from Manchester High School, Class of 1951 where she participated in several activities and sports including softball, soccer, field hockey, choir, basketball, bowling and Y-Teens. Her senior quote was, "The silvery fabric of a laugh" which couldn't be more fitting for the woman she became. She understood the importance of finding reasons to be happy and laugh, especially during difficult times. Her determination and strength were second to none, and she graciously instilled those values onto her family; along with a deep-seated appreciation for, the one and only, Shady Glen.
On May 23, 1959, she married James Robert McKay, of Manchester. They celebrated 50 years of marriage until James' passing on February 23, 2009. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Stacey Ann Watson and her brother, Kenneth Behrend. Lorraine leaves behind her son James J. McKay and his wife Leona, of Manchester; her daughter Narda Nadeau and her husband Daniel, of Broad Brook; Grandchildren Heather & Ashley Swanson, Emily McKay, Lenny Godoy, Kenneth & Ashley McKay, Meadow & Samuel Nadeau; Great Grandchildren Alyssa MacPherson, Michael Burnham, Mr. Blue; and several cousins.
Growing up, her parents built a cottage on Coventry Lake where they would spend their summers. She also loved vacationing in Cape Cod, hosting family parties, studying her lineage, and going on road trips with her partner in crime, Harriet Wetherell. In 2002, Lorraine was able to fulfill her life-long dream of visiting Ireland, along with her granddaughter, Heather.
There will be a Celebration of Life (Irish picnic), date to be determined, in the spring.
In leu of flowers, donations are being accepted on behalf of the Strengthen Your Mind Initiative (strengthenyourmind.org) where Lorraine's son, James McKay, a 3rd generation firefighter, serves as a peer support specialist. SYMI facilitates mind fitness retreats for first responders, military and healthcare workers. To leave an online condolence please visit
