Josephine M. (Fratus) Sylvia, 105, of Vernon, formerly of New Bedford, MA, beloved wife of the late Joseph S. Sylvia passed away peacefully on October 19, 2014 at Vernon Manor Health Care Center. She was born on August 10, 1909 in New Bedford, MA daughter of the late Frank M. and Annie G. (Fhatol) Fratus. Josephine had been a resident of New Bedford for most of her life until moving to Vernon in 1980. She retired after over 20 years from the Aerovox Corporation in 1974. Josephine was a longtime member of the North Baptist Church in New Bedford, MA. Josephine's life revolved around doing things for her family and hosting holiday and family gatherings, which provided her with the most satisfaction. She is survived by her two daughters, Betty A. Holmes of Vernon and Jo-Ann F. Sylvia of Manchester, CT; her stepson, Albert J. Sylvia of Acushnet, MA; her three grandchildren, Wayne Holmes and Suzanne Morin both of Vernon and Cheryl Bray and her husband, Wayne of Willington; her five great-grandchildren, Peter Morin, Mark Morin, Lydia Bray, Elana Bray and Ava Bray; several nieces; and Donna L. Brunette of Manchester, CT who was like another daughter to her. Josephine was the first-born of her eight siblings who all predeceased her: Elsie Kenny, Millicent Arsenault, Mildred Fratus, Francis Fratus, Dorothy Fratus, Marguerite Sylvia, Charles Fratus, and Gertrude Alberski. Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. Graveside services and burial will take place in the Peckham West Cemetery, 395 Mt. Pleasant St. New Bedford, MA 02740. on Wednesday, October 29 at 12:00 noon.
