Joseph S. Sinnamon

June 6, 1957 — June 13, 2015

Joseph S. Sinnamon, 58, a lifelong resident of Manchester and well know owner and chef of the Sinnamon Shop Restaurant on Oak Street passed away Saturday, June 13, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. Joe was born in Manchester, June 6, 1957 and was the husband of Glenda M. Sinnamon, the son of Margaret A. Sinnamon and the late William J. Sinnamon of Manchester. Joe was a long time member of Boy Scout Troop 27, first as a scout and then as an adult leader.

Joe graduated from Manchester High School and earned an Associates Degree in Food Management from Manchester Community College. Joe spent seven years at Cavey's Restaurant in town before opening The Sinnamon Shop in 1986. The breakfast and lunch shop became a local institution and was known as being the "Cheers for the food group" which he owned and operated for 28 years until he was forced to close in 2014 due to his health diagnosis.

Joe took great pride in cooking as much from scratch as possible and for providing his loyal customers and friends with a home cooked meal at a fair price. Joe enjoyed watching his customers grow up and come back with their own families over his many years in business. He was quoted as stating "I'm going to miss the customers more than the work" when he finally had to close his doors.

In addition to his wife and mother, Joe is survived by a step-daughter, Kate Dunlap of Minnesota, five brothers and their wives, James Sinnamon of Texas, Eric Sinnamon of Manchester, Edwin Sinnamon of Vermont, Thomas Sinnamon of East Hartford and George Sinnamon of Bristol, numerous nieces, nephews and longtime loyal friends and employees of the Shop, Laurie, Jenna and Chrissie. Besides his father, Joe was predeceased by a sister, Mary Sinnamon Michelman.

Joe was lovingly cared for during the last year by his brother George, sister-in-law Jennifer and their eleven children at their home in Bristol while receiving cancer treatments at Yale New Haven's Smilow Cancer Institute. George stated that "Joe was an integral part of our family and spent many hours teaching our children his culinary arts skills and was comforted in turn by sharing intimately in the children's active lives, loving and joyful countenance and, in his words, our "dynamic household" He particularly enjoyed a three week vacation with us at a cabin by a lake in Maine last summer during a break in his chemo treatments." Joe was surrounded by the family and his loving wife, Glenda, and was very much at peace at the end.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., with a Memorial Service and celebration of His Life to begin at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Holmes Funeral Home 400 Main Street Manchester. Burial will be private.
