John Robert Moriconi Sr

January 26, 1930 — October 5, 2014

John R. "Bob" Moriconi Sr., 84, 1st Sgt. US. Army Ret. of Manchester, CT and Cape Cod, MA went AWOL on October 5, 2014 at Manchester Memorial Hospital in the hospice unit surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late John and Mary M. Moriconi. He voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17 just as World War II ended and was assigned to the Army of Occupation in Japan. Thus began 20 years of devoted service in Japan, Germany, Korea, Vietnam and the Continental Divide. His many awards included the Combat Infantry Badge, Soldiers Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Bronze Star Medal with Valor 3rd Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with 5 Battle Stars, Army Commendation Medal with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Battle Stars along with several other Medals. The Bronze Star Service Medal is very high on the medal chart and is not easily obtained. He was the type of person who was a go-getter, very out in front and proud of what he was doing. John was a member of the Army & Navy Club, the Washington Social Club and the Zipser Club all in Manchester as well as a longtime member of B.P.O.E. # 1893. He was a member of Our Lady of the Cape Catholic Church, Brewster, MA and St. James Church in Manchester. After retiring from the Army, he became the Custodial Foremen with the Manchester Board of Education in the Buildings & Grounds Department, retiring in May, 1990. John leaves his caring and loving wife, Barbara (Supple) Sullivan-Moriconi of 10 years and was predeceased by his wife of 32 years, Martha (Morianos) Moriconi. He is survived by his son, John R. Moriconi Jr. and his friend Julie of East Weymouth, MA his sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Michael Cogan of Arnold, MD, his brother-in-law, James "Tony" Morianos and his wife, Diane of Stafford Springs and Florida, two sisters-in-law, Janet Bilodeau of Avon and Patricia Morianos of Bolton and his special friend, Gail Morianos of East Hampton. John also leaves his step-daughter, Cheryl Belch, step- granddaughter, Autumn Belch and step-great-granddaughter, Payton Belch all of Manchester, several nieces, nephews, his special golfing buddies and his Cape Cod, MA friends. He also leaves his 100 year old aunt, Florence Moriconi of Manchester. Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014 from 5-8 pm at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St. Manchester with an Elks Ritual to be held at 7 pm. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 9:15 am at the Holmes Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. James Church, 896 Main St. Manchester. Burial with military honors will follow in East Cemetery, Manchester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, CT.
