Joan B. Wood

Joan B. (Sheldon) Wood, 87, of Manchester, passed away Friday, July 29, 2022, at Manchester Manor. Born September 12, 1934, in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, she was the only child of the late Harley F. And Alida V. (Post) Sheldon. Joan attended schools in Hinsdale, N.H. and in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. She graduated from Keene Teachers College with a Bachelor of Education in 1956. Joan later earned a Masters of Education from the University of Hartford in 1964. She also attended the University of Connecticut for a sixth year in education. She came to Manchester in the fall of 1956 to teach Home Economics at Barnard Junior High. Then, she moved to Illing Junior High in 1967, later retiring from Manchester schools in June of 1981. Joan married a fellow teacher, George E. Wood, in June of 1968. He proceeded her in death on January 17, 2002. She is survived by two daughters, Mary W. Bishop and husband W. Robert of Pompton Plains, N.J., and Sharon Wood and wife Camille LaGuire of Lansing, Michigan. Also by her grandchildren Matthew Bishop and wife Kimberly of Mt. Ephraim, N.J., Sara (Bishop) DiCola and husband Nicholas of Boonton, N.J., Timothy Bishop of San Diego, California, and Christopher Bishop of Berlin, Germany. She also leaves behind one great grandson, Andrew DiCola. She was a proud member of North Methodist Church of Manchester, the Connecticut Society of Genealogists, the French Canadian Genealogical Society of CT, and the Retired Teachers of Manchester. Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home has care of the arrangements. The family will receive friends and family at Holmes-Watkins, 400 Main St. Manchester, CT on Thursday, August 4th at 11:00am with a funeral service immediately following at 12:00pm. Burial will follow at St. James Cemetery, 368 Broad St., Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army or Manchester Area Conference of Churches.
