Jimmy A. Martin

February 18, 1939 — April 13, 2017

Jimmy Martin, 78 of Vernon, CT, loving husband of Cynthia (Bagley) Martin with whom he would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in June, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Rockville General Hospital. Jimmy was born in Van Buren, Maine on February 18, 1939, one of ten children of the late Gerald and Maryann (Daigle) Martin. He was raised in Maine, moved to Connecticut when he was fourteen, and had been a resident of Vernon since 1972. He served in the US Air Force and then became a member of the Connecticut Army National Guard. Subsequently, he served in Operation Desert Storm with the 1205th Transportation Unit with The Army Reserve, and retired in 1999 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Jim was employed by various construction companies as a truck driver and retired in 2008 as a CDL instructor at Baran Institute. He was a member of the Manchester Knights of Columbus and was a fan of NASCAR and UCONN basketball. Besides his wife, Cindy, he is survived by his son, Clint G. (Laticha) Martin of Stafford Springs, CT; two grandchildren, Mason and Olivia Martin; six siblings, Rudy (Joan) Martin of Ottawa Ontario, Canada, Danny Martin of St. David, AZ, Neal Wetmore of Middletown, CT, Elizabeth (Kim) Middleton of Seal Beach, CA, Jackie (Paul) Scappaticci of Manchester, CT, and Patricia Barbuito of Manchester, CT; two sisters-in-law, Henrietta Martin of Bristol, CT and Yvonne Martin of Ottawa Ontario, Canada, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by three siblings, Robert, Norman, and Mona Martin. He also leaves behind his furry companion, Rupert. A graveside service with military honors will be held Thursday, April 20, at 11:00 AM in the East Cemetery (Harrison and East Center Street) in Manchester. Jimmy's family would like to thank the nursing staff at Rockville General Hospital, Vernon VNA, and Palliative Care.
