Jean (Smith) Lobaugh, 86, of South Windsor, beloved wife of Melvin R. Lobaugh, for 60 years, daughter of the late Frederick Shirrell and Elizabeth (Felden) Smith died peacefully on Friday, August 17, 2018. She was born August 11, 1932 in Manchester. Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and educator. Her love of music brought her many hours of pleasure, joy and peace. She was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, South Windsor, having served as past president of the Women's League, a former choir member and a Bible School Teacher. She was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1950, a member of the claws reunion committee, Teachers College of Connecticut (now CCSU), Class of 1954, serving on the Scholarship Committee for her class, and matriculated for Masters Equivalence at UConn, Fairfield University, and in the Town of Vernon. She taught school for thirty-five years, the last 24 in Vernon where she was honored in 1981 as Vernon's First Teacher of the Year. She also taught in Ellington and New Canaan, CT and in York Springs, PA. Jean received Vernon Public Schools Certificate of Achievement "Profiles in Professionalism" Award. She was a Life Member of the National Education Association, NEA-Retired, CEA, and CEA-Retired Life Member. A former active member of Vernon Education Association, Retired Teachers of Manchester, and the ARTC of Connecticut. She was a member and past president of Rho Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, honoring key women educators. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter # 392 in Gettysburg, PA. Jean was an active member of Christian Women's Club of Manchester having served as Contact Advisor. She formerly served as a driver for Fish in South Windsor, American Red Cross volunteer, and the Vernon Historical Society where she helped to develop a new revised text, Vernon Our Town, used by third graders in the Town of Vernon. She was a past Senior Girl Scout Leader for six years in Biglerville, PA and a piano teacher in Pennsylvania. She formerly served as choir director and organist at the Upper Bermudian Church, Gardens, PA. As a young woman she was Past Worthy Advisor of Manchester Assembly #15, Order of Rainbow for Girls and Past Grand Representative to the State of Ohio.
In addition to her husband Mel, she leaves her loving and devoted son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Marie Lobaugh of Ellington, two loving, cherished grandchildren, Adam Lobaugh and his wife Sheila and their son Chase, and Kristin (Lobaugh) Ouimet and her husband Kevin and their daughter Emma, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law in Pennsylvania, Elsie Wire and Kenneth Kemper, and several nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania, California, and Connecticut. She leaves cousins in Connecticut, and her many treasured friends and students that have always been close to her heart. She was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Matzdorf Collins and several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws in Pennsylvania.
Jean will truly be missed by those whose lives she touched and lovingly remembered by her family and many friends for her smile and laughter and her willing spirit to work to better the lives of those she loved.
A memorial service for Jean will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 239 Graham Road, South Windsor on Saturday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Upper Bermudian Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gardners, Pennsylvania at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 15.
