Jean Ellen (Britt) Derby (93) passed away on July 4, 2024, the beloved wife of 59 years to the late James L. Derby. She was born on May 22, 1931, daughter of the late Emma and Paul Britt.She graduated from ECSU in May 1953 and married Jim, the love of her life in June 1953. They moved to Hebron, CT and were welcomed into the community of the Gilead Congregational Church. She was involved in many activities and served on many committees at the church.Jean worked at RHAM high school as an Audio Visual aide for several years.She devoted over 35 years to the Girl Scouts, guiding and teaching young women. Jean rose through the ranks to serve as District Service Leader Chairman. On June 17, 1989 she received the CT Trails "Thanks Badge" which is the highest possible award given to adults. Jean was instrumental in the steady growth of Hebron Girl Scouts. She also received the Outstanding Citizen of The Year by the Hebron Junior Women's Club on May 18th, 1976. Jean valued time spent in her home, around the kitchen table visiting with neighbors, friends and loved ones. And she was well known for her "Aunt Jean's Baked Beans." She also held a special space in her heart for her favorite team, the UCONN Huskies. She enjoyed the family camping trips every summer when the children were young; especially time spent with the Bingham family.Jean is survived by 3 loving children: Stephen (Sharon) of Troy, NY, Susan of Manchester, CT and Sharon (Randy) of Brooklyn, NY. Grandchildren: Laura (Dave), Melanie (Treavor) and Mollie (Shea) Great-Grandchildren: James and Paul. She is also survived by her special sister Sheelah Britt of Woburn, MA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law Stephen and Ann Britt and niece Catherine Marie Britt.The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of Manchester Manor for their excellent care, kindness and support to Jean and Sue.Jean's family will receive relatives and friends on July 12, 2024 from 4:00- 7:00 PM at the Holmes Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester, CT 06040. The church service will be on July 13, 2024 at 10:00 AM at the Gilead Congregational Church, 672 Gilead St., Hebron, CT 06248. Burial will be at the Gilead Cemetery.In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Gilead Congregational Church or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research.
