Irene Lois (Judson) Hughes, 83 of Manchester, loving wife for fifty-five years of Frederick J. Hughes, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at an area convalescent home after a short illness.
Irene was born in Winsted, CT on July 27, 1933, daughter of Tracy and Lillian (Smith) Judson. She was raised in Winsted, attended Nasson College in Maine, and had been a resident of Manchester since 1961. She was a longtime and faithful member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester and was a member of the church's Ruth Circle. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, which included many camping trips when her kids were younger and more recently enjoyed watching UCONN Women's basketball with her husband. She also enjoyed sharing her love for kitchen gadgets with everyone she knew. Another of her greatest joys was being a grandmother to Alex and Katie, who she loved tremendously. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, and cooking for her family.
With her husband, she is survived by her daughter and son, Lois Olechny and her husband Steven of Saratoga, CA, and Frederick J. Hughes Jr. and his wife Virginia of South Windsor, CT; two grandchildren, Alexander Hughes and Katherine Hughes; her sister, Alice Lester of Vernon, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Judy Judson.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 1, at 12:00 PM at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 60 Church Street in Manchester. Burial will follow in the East Cemetery in Manchester. Visiting hours are Sunday, July 31, from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center Street, Manchester.
