Helen Hamilton Scheid, beloved widow of Harold Scheid, passed away on the evening of April 25, 2017 at her home in Manchester, CT. She was born to a Methodist clergyman and his wife, on December 6, 1922 in Marion, MA.
Helen attended the New England School of Art in Boston for two years. She lived at the Franklin Square House, a hotel for students and working women, and worked there for the duration of World War II.
In 1944 she and her high school sweetheart Harold were married. At the time, Harold was a Merchant Seaman, carrying troops to and from Europe. Helen and Harold had 73 loving years together.
After home and family, Helen was proudest of having been a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for six years; she also helped with Cub Scouts.
She had many interests - reading, sewing, writing family remembrances and some poetry. She also enjoyed traveling the USA, trips which included visiting most of the presidential museums, homes, and burial places. History, especially comparing changing times, the arts (particularly drama); and painting in oils and pastels. Ecology and the environment were also interests. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she also had eclectic tastes in music.
Helen was predeceased by 3 brothers and 1 sister and, of course, Harold. Survivors include a son, Bruce Scheid and his wife Michele of Spring Hill, FL; a daughter, Linda Hall and her husband James of Colchester, CT; a son, Philip Scheid of Vernon, CT; and a grandson, Matthew Hall and his wife Christina of Willington, CT. She also left two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service Wednesday, May 3, at 11:00 AM at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester. A private burial will be in Buckland Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Visiting Nurse & Health Services Of Connecticut, 8 Keynote Drive, Vernon, CT 06066. To leave a message of condolence, please visit the Holmes Funeral Home web site, at
