Harold Allan Whiting. Born 5/18/1931 in St. Albans, VT; son of the late Hayden and Clara (Underwood) Whiting. Survived by his devoted wife Doris (Gally); a daughter, E. Carolyn and husband John Lindsay of So. Windsor; and five sons: Wallace and wife Patricia of Santa Rosa, CA; George and wife Pat Bond of Waterford; David and wife Leslie of Manchester; Timothy and wife Susan of Indianapolis, IN and son Harold, Jr. and wife Sheri of Manchester; and three step-children: Richard Lenhardt and wife Heidi of Vernon; Robert Lenhardt and Betty Black of Dallas, TX and Diane and husband Bret Calder of West Granby, CT; fourteen grandchildren, four step grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren.
Harold attended elementary school in Sheldon Springs, VT and moved with his parents to Manchester in 1942; then Manchester Green School and graduating in 1948 from Manchester High. He then attended UConn, Hillyer College, UConn School of Law and Insurance, and in later years attended Kettering University.
From 1950 to 1958 Harold was associated with T.J. Crockett in the insurance and real estate business. During these years Harold was involved in many real estate and building developments. In 1955 he entered business with his father in The Whiting Corp., fuel oil dealers and heating contractors. The business was sold in 1973. Harold entered the automobile business in 1974 as Office Manager and then General Manager of three Buick and GMC dealerships in Hartford, Manchester and New Britain. In 1991 he became an automobile dealer upon the purchase of a Buick-Cadillac and a GMC-UD dealership, both in Torrington. Two months later, a very sudden illness resulting in his total physical disability, Harold was forced to retire from daily activity and sold the business a year later.
Harold was very active in many organizations in the area. He served as Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 25 and Business Manager of its operations at Lake of Isles and Camp Kirkham in E. Lempster, NH. He was a 72 year member of Center Congregational Church and served as a Deacon , Church Moderator and Financial Coordinator. Harold was formerly active in the Civitan Club, serving as President and Secretary; also formerly on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross-Manchester Div., a former member of the Chamber of Commerce and the British American Club, all of Manchester. He was very active in many Masonic organizations, being a 62 year member of Manchester Lodge #73 and served on the Board of Trustees. Harold was a Past High Priest and later Secretary of Delta Chapter RAM (now: Pathagoras); a member of Wolcott Council RASM and Washington Commandary #1, Knights Templar. He was also an Honorary Kentucky Colonel.
For over forty years Harold was a very active golfer and was a charter and life member of the Beaver Point Golf Club. He enjoyed playing golf across the country and spent many weeks in Myrtle Beach throughout these years.
Harold especially loved to travel and made many trips with his wife across the USA and Canada, and also to the Caribbean, Bermuda, Australia and New Zealand.
A funeral service will be held Monday, December 4, at 10:30 AM at the Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester with burial to follow in the East Cemetery in Manchester. Visiting hours are at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 PM to 4 PM with a Masonic service at 3:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, Harold has requested that donations in his memory be made to Boy Scout Troop 25/Camp Kirkham, c/o Center Congregational Church, 11 Center St., Manchester, CT 06040 or to the Masonic Charity Foundation, PO Box 70, in Wallingford, CT 06492.
