Harold John Scheid, beloved husband of Helen Hamilton Scheid, died March 5, 2017. Born in Plymouth, MA, on January 31, 1923, he was a life-long Red Sox fan. He met his one-and-only sweetheart in high school, and they were married on April 15, 1944, and had 72 years together.
Harold joined the Merchant Marine in 1943, and to the end of the war he ferried troops in convoy across the Atlantic to Europe, and POWs and wounded back to the U.S. on return trips. After the war, Harold studied Animal Husbandry at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He worked on a private farm until starting work for the State of Connecticut. He spent 22 years as manager of the dairy at the former Osborn Prison Farm in Enfield, winning awards and notations on the increased milk production of the herds while he was there. After retiring from the State in 1977, he continued working on a private farm until 1985.
After living 25 years in Vernon, Harold and Helen moved to Manchester. Because he liked to drive, they traveled all over the United States and parts of Canada. Harold also enjoyed doing crossword and sudoku puzzles. Always a great walker, he joined the Hockanum River Linear Park Committee in Manchester, helping to build and maintain the hiking trails until a year or so before his death.
Harold was predeceased by his brother Francis and his wife Barbara. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Bruce who lives in Florida with his wife Michele; a daughter Linda Hall who lives with her husband Jim in Colchester; and a second son Philip who lives in Vernon. He also leaves one grandson, Matthew Hall and his wife Christina, 2 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held for Harold at St. Bridget Church, at 80 Main Street, Manchester on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11:30am. There are no calling hours. Burial of ashes will be at a later date.
