HANS WEISS, 93, of Vernon, died peacefully in the comfort of his home on August 5. He is survived by his wife, Lotte, his three children; Robert Weiss (wife, Beth) of Manchester, Lisa Lelas and Linda McClintock, of Guilford, and his three grandchildren; Dr. Lindsay Lelas (fiancé, Richie) of New Haven, Lexy Lelas, and Michael McClintock, of Guilford.
Immigrating to America from his homeland of Slovakia via Germany, Hans was well known to many as an international artist, author and prominent local businessman. He was the founder/owner of Dynamic Metal Products, Inc., and the Hans Weiss Art Gallery/Fine Arts Studio/Museum, in Manchester. Hans was an active member of the Manchester Chamber, National Tool & Die Association, longtime board member of MCC and Eastern CT State College, a lifetime member of The Hundred Club of CT, and countless other organizations, including The Hartford Saengerbund, the German club where he was a chorus singer for over 60 years.
He is the author of ‘Dynamic Journey,’ a historical memoir of his life from a farm boy in Slovakia, his escape to freedom during WWII, graduating from trade school at Mercedes Benz in Stuttgart, Germany, to his adult life in the United States, starting his own business and family, as he continued his love and passion as a self-taught artist. His portraiture, landscape paintings, and pen & ink drawings are proudly displayed today in numerous galleries and cathedrals around the world, including the State Capital building in Washington DC, the UCONN Library, St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Manchester…and the art wing at Manchester Community College named in his honor: The Hans Weiss Newspace Art Center.
Calling hours will be on Monday, August 11 from 4-6 PM at the Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester. Funeral Home chapel service on Tuesday, August 12 at 11 AM, with a private family burial after.
