George A. Mckenzie

November 5, 1929 — March 18, 2017

George Alexander McKenzie, 87, of Tavares, FL, passed on peacefully at Lake Eustis Medical Center in Lake Eustis, Florida on March 18, 2017. George lived most of his life in Manchester, CT where he raised his three sons with his beloved wife, the late Velma McKenzie. He was born on November 5, 1929 in Stillwater, Maine and was the son of the late Hugh McKenzie and Alice Hazelton. George had two brothers and one sister, Jim of Bangor Maine, the late Arthur Edwin of Tavares, FL and Mary Johnson of Tavares, FL. He has many nieces and nephews residing between Maine & Florida. George began his working career for Getchell Ice Company in Bangor Maine. After marrying Velma, they moved to Rockville where he began his career of 33 years at Pratt & Whitney as a Security Officer. While living in Manchester, he was a member of the Congregational Church and belonged to the Masons of Manchester. George enjoyed traveling with Velma and his brothers & sister throughout the years. More than anything, George enjoyed his boys, Daniel, Stephen & Rodney. His tragic loss of Daniel and his wife Maureen left George with a broken heart. In addition to his parents, George was also predeceased by his wife, Velma, his brother and wife Arthur & Avis McKenzie, and his infant grandson, Kyle McKenzie. George married Phyllis Kaiser in 2006 and they spent many hours traveling to North Carolina for long visits with Dan and Maureen. George is survived by his wife Phyllis of Tavares, FL, her daughters Pamela & Connie, & son Allen, George's sons Stephen & his wife Chris of Hebron, CT, Rodney & his wife Peggy of East Hampton, CT, his brother Jim and friend Judy of Bangor, ME, & his sister Mary & her husband John of Tavares, FL. All will miss him very much. George's legacy includes his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He touched all of their lives and made them all a special part of his life. Keith & his fianc Jackie; Kimberly & John and their son, Alex; Hillary & John LaMalfa and their children Mckenzie & Samuel; Cheryl & Rod Colson; Tracy Pentalow and son, Dylan. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 2:00pm - 4:00pm followed by a memorial service at Holmes Funeral Home 400 Main St. in Manchester, CT on Saturday, March 25, 2017. Burial is private to the immediate family. George will be rested beside his wife, Velma in the East Cemetery in Manchester, CT. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial donations in George's memory to the Cove at Tavares Village, 1501 Sunshine Parkway, Tavares, FL 32778.
