George Scott Downing, 68, of Manchester, CT, loving husband for 48 years of Beverly (Burke) Downing, died Sunday, June 4, 2017 after a long illness.
He was born in Manchester, CT on May 6, 1949, son of the late George and Jacqueline (Giroux) Downing. He was raised in Manchester and Andover, CT. He graduated from RHAM High School and Central Connecticut State College. He resided in several locations while being employed by Sears Roebuck & Company for 35 years. He lived in Sandwich, MA, then Hamden, CT for twenty years, and ten years in Niskayuna, NY. After retiring he returned to Manchester in 2005.
With his wife, he is survived by four children, Scott Downing and his wife Pamela of Auburn, WA, Benjamin Downing and his wife Danyael of Cheshire, CT, Sara Beggans and her husband John of Wellesley, MA, and Julie McCormack and her husband Michael of Darien, CT; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Grace, Ryan, Leah, Jack, James, Abby, Michael, and Aidan; his sister-in-law, Laurie Bentley of San Antonio, TX, and nephew, Seth Gilistro. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his sister Linda.
Visiting hours for family and friends are Sunday, June 11th from 3 PM to 6 PM at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester. Funeral services are Monday, June 12th at 9:15 AM beginning at the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. James Church, 896 Main Street, Manchester. Burial will follow in the East Cemetery in Manchester.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration at theaftd.org, or The Alzheimers Resource Center at arc-ct.org.
