Gary Alfred Winter, 71, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, July 19th, 2017, at Rockville General Hospital, after a brief but intense battle with mesothelioma.
Gary was born in Hartford, but grew up and built his life in Manchester. After graduating from Manchester High School in 1963, he served in the Army National Guard, and began working at Pratt & Whitney, where he worked on commercial engine business contracts and from which he would retire after 37 years. While working, he also attended and earned a business degree from the University of Connecticut.
Gary was an avid sports fan. He fished; played softball, tennis, and golf throughout his career at P&W; and belonged for many years to a duckpin bowling league at Holiday Lanes. He loved the New York Yankees, the New York Giants football team, and the UConn women's basketball team. He was also a fan of poker; he enjoyed watching it, and enjoyed his many visits to the casino.
He is survived by his beloved wife Janet, to whom he was married for 45 years; his older brothers Raymond and Roger, and their wives Sarah and Delorise; his daughters Carlene Ingram and Kimberly Stewart, and their husbands Steven and Finlay; his dear friends Tommy Riggs, Sandy Thorpe, and Joey Cataldi; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces. He will be missed.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a time of visitation on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St. Manchester from 2-4 pm. Funeral services will he held on Monday, July 24th at 10:00 am at the funeral home followed by burial in East Cemetery, Manchester. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
