Frederick L. Mahoney

July 7, 1920 — March 3, 2017

Frederick L. Mahoney, 96, of Manchester, husband of the late Kathryn (Dimlow) Mahoney, died March 3, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Born in Manchester, CT., July 7, 1920, son of the late John and Annie (McVeigh) Mahoney, he was a lifelong resident. Mr. Mahoney was a teacher and Principal retiring in 1988 after 41 years of distinguished service at New Park Avenue School, Michael D. Fox School, Mark Twain School, Barnard Brown School, and Kennelly School, Hartford, CT. His subject specialty was mathematics. A United States Army veteran of World War II, he graduated from the Fourth Service Command Signal School and served with the First Cavalry Division in radio communications in the South Pacific. Among his most treasured experiences was liberating villages from the Japanese in the Philippines and distributing his chocolate rations to the children there. He was a graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, University of Georgia, Columbia University and the University of Hartford. In addition to his teaching, Mr. Mahoney did radio work at WTIC in Hartford, substituting as host for Allen Ludden on the locally produced show, "Mind Your Manners". Mr. Mahoney was a member of the Association of Retired Teachers of CT., a former member of the Manchester Senior Citizens, MCCOAA (Manchester Community College Older Adults Organization), Irish-American Club of Glastonbury, Rockville Elks, and a long-time communicant of St. Bridget Church. He was happily married to his beloved Kay for over sixty years. They enjoyed traveling, especially their trips to Ireland and Paris. Their most special destination was Cape Cod where they vacationed each summer. Mr. Mahoney is the last of the Mahoney Family siblings. He was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Mahoney, Anne Bibisi, Bessie Chara, Doris Hultine, Marion Krech, Margaret Rose and his brothers, John and James. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families, all who held "Uncle Fred" in high regard as did his loyal and caring friends. His family is grateful to his conscientious caregivers whose kind service enabled Fred to remain in his own home. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Bridget Church 80 Main Street Manchester on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11 AM. There are no calling hours.
