Eugenia 'Genie' Moriarty

October 20, 1927 — February 27, 2023

Eugenia "Genie" Moriarty, 95, of Manchester, Conn., passed away after a brief illness on February 27, 2023, at her home and attended by her family. Genie was born Oct. 20, 1927, the elder of two children born to Eugene Brodeur and Blanche Ferree Brodeur of Manchester. She and her brother Freddie attended Green School and Manchester High School (MHS class of 1946). Genie briefly attended the University of Connecticut before obtaining her RN with a nursing diploma degree at St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford. At a New Years Eve party, Genie met the love of her life, Edward Moriarty of Manchester. In her diary she wrote that the two of them talked all night and for hours on the phone the next day. They were rarely apart after that, marrying in 1950 and settling in Manchester to raise their four children. For more than a decade, Genie worked as a school nurse at several Manchester elementary schools. In retirement she volunteered at the Lutz Junior Museum in Manchester and helped organize many MHS class reunions. Genie enjoyed creative arts, such as painting with oils and "throwing pots" that she gave away as gifts to her family and friends. She was a regular Friday bowler with the ladies of the Perfume League at Holiday Lanes in Manchester. She was an excellent baker, and one of her recipes for a cherry crumb cake earned a feature story in the Manchester Herald, along with a photo of Genie slicing into the scrumptious dessert. Genie and Ed enjoyed an active life, riding bicycles and taking daily walks around the neighborhood. They also owned a series of small to mid-sized sailboats, and took frequent day sails out of Stonington, Conn. They traveled frequently, often with friends, taking cruises and vacations to Florida, but most often traveling by car through Vermont and other parts of their beloved New England. Genie is survived by daughters Paula Moriarty and her partner Mark Daukas, of Moodus, Connecticut; Donna Moriarty and her husband Michael Jacobi of Ossining, New York; and Beth Jarow and her husband Robert Jarow of Manchester; and by son Stephen Moriarty and his wife Deirdra Murphy of West Bath, Maine. Genie is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Edward and her brother Alfred A. Brodeur. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 3 at Holmes Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester, Conn. Calling hours are from 9:00-10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Church, 896 Main Street in Manchester. Genie will be laid to rest at East Cemetery in Manchester, where she and Edward went on many of their daily walks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Genie's memory to Nursing Beyond Borders.
