Eugene R. Suslam, 87, formerly of Manchester, passed away on November 23, 2015 at the Connecticut State Veterans Home in Rocky Hill.
Gene, son of Benjamin and Mary (Lucas) Suslam, was born June 13, 1928 in Manchester, CT, where he remained a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1946, and for many years, a member of his class reunion committee. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948. He graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York City. Gene's profession was interior design and during his career was employed by Watkins Brothers of Manchester, Lord & Taylor, Benson's, General Electric, the John LaFalce Company and ultimately his own business, Gene Suslam Design Line. He enjoyed classical music and opera, was an avid reader of the New York Times, and a longtime parishioner of St. James Church.
He is survived by his cousins, Robert Merrer of Danbury, Glenn Merrer in Arizona, Thomas Kudzma and Jack Kudzma, both of New Hampshire, Daniel Kudzma in Massachusetts, Peggy Shore in Maine, Judy Gates in Michigan, and Susan Zikos in Pennsylvania. He is also survived by grandnieces and grandnephews, and numerous close and dear friends. Besides his parents, Gene was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Suslam.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the outstanding care given Gene by the staff of the Medical Facility at the State Veterans Home.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 1, at 9:00 AM at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester with a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:00 AM at St. James Church, 896 Main Street, Manchester. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.
