Edward J. Tomaszewski

May 12, 1923 — August 24, 2017

Edward J. Tomaszewski, 94, of Bolton, died peacefully on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at home. He was the loving husband of the late Patty (Solosky) Tomaszewski and the late Evelyn (Leppin) Barracliffe Tomaszewski. Ed was born on May 12, 1923 in Newington son of the late Anthony and Mary Tomaszewski and had been a resident of Bolton since 1954. He was a proud veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Navy as a baker. Prior to his retirement in 1983, Ed was employed as a tool & die maker with Kurtz Brothers in Manchester for over 32 years, and was previously employed at the Royal Typewriter in Hartford. He attended Second Congregational Church in Manchester and St. Maurice Church in Bolton. Ed was a longtime member of the Army & Navy Club in Manchester. He was affectionately known as Dad & Ed, Uncle Eddie, Grampa, Poppa Ed, and Farmer Ed. This master gardener had a passion for growing vegetables and flowers and thoroughly enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. When he was no longer able to garden himself he would sit on the porch and diligently guide family and neighbors who lent a hand. Farmer Ed had a roadside stand out in front of the house, you paid by the honor system, and he donated surplus veggies to local shelters and senior centers. Prior passions were raising cows and chickens, selling the eggs from a refrigerator on the back porch, and cut your own Christmas trees. He loved to swim and could float for hours, was a collector of tools, a lover of sweets, enjoyed looking through family photos, and was a bit of a local newspaper celebrity. In his youth he was quite the dancer, every weekend at the Polish National Home in Hartford. Ed is survived by his three daughters; Susan McCann and her husband Russell of Georgia, Linda Tomaszewski of Vernon, and Sandra Kean and her husband Bill of East Hartford, and his daughter by marriage Lynn Pemberton-Locke and her husband Brian Locke of Manchester, his stepson Richard Barracliffe of Manchester, nine grandchildren; Michael, Vincent, Katy, Kyle, Valerie, Amanda, Dawn, Sarah and Ryan, five great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings Stanley, Mary and John. The family would like to acknowledge the special care and friendship provided by his caregiver Leslie Amara of Home Instead of Tolland. Memorial calling hours will be held at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St. in Manchester on Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 1-4 pm with a service of remembrance at 3:30 pm.
