Edna Louisa Kurtz, age 110, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024. She was born Edna Ellington on 7/16/1913 in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Leonard Edward Ellington and Annie (Whittles) Ellington. She was the oldest of Leonard and Annie's children, and had four sisters and a brother. Edna was married twice. Her first husband was Edmund Perry Joslin, they married in 1931 and he was the father of sons, Norman and George, Edmund passed away in 1935 after only 5 years of marriage. Later she married Edward Winfred Kurtz and father of son, Jon. She also has 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren.Edna received a Certificate of Graduations form Rutland Public Schools, June 1927 and a Diploma from Worcester Business Institute from the Stenographic Department, June 1930. After graduation from the Institute and after Perry passed away, she worked for Melville Shoe Corporation as a comptometer operator in the Accounting Department. Edna lived in Rutland, MA until the time she married Edward Kurtz in 1940. After marrying Edward, Edna was a house wife and did occasional volunteer work such as a gift show cart volunteer at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester, Connecticut. Edna and Edward lived in Auburn and Millbury, Massachusetts and Manchester, Connecticut; then Edna moved to Lombard, Illinois after Edward's passing in 2003. Her son Norman passed away in 2016.Edna enjoyed monthly family gatherings, cards and volunteering. During the 1940's and beyond, Edna, Edward and the boys, hiked, skied, kayaked, and sailed throughout New England along with hiking and camping in New Hampshire's Mount Washington and Maine's Baxter State Park and climbing Mount Katahdin. They kayaked and camped the Damariscotta River. Skiing and camping on Mount Washington's Tuckerman's Ravine, and many ski areas through-out Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut were visited. Edna also sailed on Webster Lake in Massachusetts and Columbia Lake in Connecticut.Calling Hours will be held on Saturday, June 29th from 9am till 11am at Holmes Watkins Funeral Home (400 Main Street, Manchester CT) followed by burial at East Cemetery (220 East Center Street, Manchester CT).
