E. Mary Blackwell

February 11, 1926 — July 14, 2015

E. Mary (Geach) Blackwell, 89 of Manchester, beloved wife of Eugene L. Blackwell, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, with her husband at her side. Mary was born February 11, 1926 in White Plains, NY, daughter of the late William and Edna (Paul) Geach and resided in Manchester since 1954. She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., earning her Bachelor's Degree, and earned her Master's Degree from Boston University. Mary was a devout and active parishioner of St. Bridget Church for more than 60 years and was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the St. Bridget Choir; the Mother's Circle; the St. Bridget Rosary Society; the Visitation Ministry; the RCIA Formation team; the St. Bridget Small Group; and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She served as St. Bridget's organist for several years, and she and her husband received the St. Joseph Award from Archbishop Henry Mansell. Mary enjoyed gardening, reading, birdwatching and her family. Her family is grateful for the compassionate care given to Mary by the staff of Visiting Nurse Health Services, Corp. and of A Caring Hand, and is especially grateful for her personal caregiver, Abena. Mary is survived by her loving family: husband Eugene; son, William L. Blackwell of Wareham, MA; son, Geoffrey T. Blackwell and his wife, Judith of Vernon; daughter, Barbara A. McVeigh and her husband, Frederick of Manchester; son, David H. Blackwell and his wife, Kathryn of South Windsor; son, E. Lawrence Blackwell and his wife, Elizabeth of Manchester; a sister, Jane Brady of Bloomfield; eight grandchildren: Sarah Blackwell, and her husband, Ian McCracken; James Blackwell, and Kelly Whinnem; John Blackwell, and his wife, Tess; Michael Blackwell, and Brianna Kelly; Joshua McVeigh; Cody McVeigh; Mary Blackwell; Benjamin Blackwell; and two great-grandchildren: Anne and June, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, 12:00 noon at St. Bridget Church, 80 Main St. Manchester, by one of her favorite priests, Fr. Stephen Sledesky, with burial to follow in St. Bridget Cemetery, Manchester. (Everyone is asked to go directly to the church) Family and friends may call at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester on Friday, July 17, 2015, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm (Rosary to follow).
