Dorothy S. Hughes, 100, of Manchester formerly of Willimantic, beloved wife of the late Russell V. Hughes and mother of the late Carolyn Soltis Baker, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Fenwood in Manchester. Dorothy was born in Windham, May 17, 1917, daughter to William and Cora (Wilson) Shippee. She grew up in Willimantic, attended local schools and earned her teaching degree from Eastern Connecticut College. She moved to Manchester in the 1940's, where she taught at Verplanck Elementary School for 30 years before retiring in June of 1978. She was a longtime member of Community Baptist Church, a member of Retired Teachers Association, and member of Radiant Chapter No. 11 Order of Eastern Star, Windham. Dorothy loved music and took pride in having led and played piano for school and church choirs. Her happiest times were when she was cuddling her grandbabies and great grandbabies. Dorothy is survived by her loving family, son, Robert V. Hughes and his wife, Annmarie Hughes of Manchester, seven grandchildren, Cynthia Mascolo and her husband Dan, Jennifer Shukla, Scott Hughes, Tina Sobo and her husband, Matthew, Brian Hughes, Arlene Cline and her husband, Grant, Kristin Goralski and her husband, Michael, eleven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and their families. Besides her parents, husband and daughter, she was predeceased by a brother, Everett Shippee. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 10:30 am at Community Baptist Church 585 East Center Street Manchester. Private burial will be in New Willimantic Cemetery, Willimantic.
