Dorothy Lucille Gowett, age 89, of Austin, TX died Monday March 7, 2016. She was born July 9, 1926 in Saranac, NY, daughter of the late Matthew and Mildred (Dubrey) Ryan.
After graduating from the Champlain Valley Hospital School of Nursing, she worked as an RN at the hospital and for Dr. Singer in Plattsburgh. She married Francis H. Gowett in 1948. In 1963 the family moved to Manchester, CT where she worked at Crestfield Nursing Home, Manchester Memorial Hospital and Hartford Hospital. After receiving her BS in Nursing from UCONN in 1970, she continued her career with the Manchester Public Health Nursing Association and finally as a pediatric specialty nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. After her husband's death in 2002, Dorothy returned to Plattsburgh in 2003 where she lived until 2012, at which time she moved to Austin, TX to be near family.
She is survived by her brothers Harold (Joyce) Ryan of Saranac, NY, and Dr. Gerald (Mimi) Ryan of Greece, NY; sister Marilyn (John) McCrank of Rochester, NY; son Edward Gowett (Eva) of Austin, TX and daughters Ellen Ryan (Arthur Simpkin) of Austin, TX, and Nancy Pratt (Doraine) of Clifton Park, NY; grandson Michael (Heidi) of Hillsboro, OR and granddaughters, Cynthia (Mike) DeTora of Ringwood, NJ, and Jennifer (Todd) Sanders of Austin, TX; 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy is predeceased by her brothers Matthew and Robert Ryan.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday March 15, 2016 from 4-7 PM at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. A Catholic Memorial Prayer Service will be held Wednesday March 16, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home, followed by burial in St. James Cemetery in Manchester.
