Don A. Carpenter, 88 of Manchester, CT died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 10, 2017. Born in Marlboro, MA, he was the son of the late Frank and Catherine (Stent) Carpenter. He was the beloved husband of Maude Wilson Carpenter for nearly 67 years, together raising seven children in Manchester and Bolton. In addition to his wife, he leaves his children Keith Carpenter of California, Sharon Fish of Manchester, Rosemary Johnson and her husband Rod of Manchester, Carol Carpenter of Chester, Jean Carpenter of Ellington, and Alan Carpenter and Lisa Touloumjian of Mansfield. He is also survived by his five siblings Bryce Carpenter, Virginia Bissell, Natalie Moseley, William Carpenter and Sandra Dotson. He was predeceased by his son David Carpenter of Manchester. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Kristin, Michael, Duwayne, Linnea, Brian and Sou, Kyle, Deonnedre and Danisa, as well as Lisa, Sierra, Sean and Jesse in California. He was especially pleased to meet his great-grandson Khane, born in September. Don graduated from Manchester High School and served honorably in the Navy as a radio man for four years. He retired from Pratt & Whitney after 34 years during which he rarely missed a day. He then enjoyed driving leased cars for 10 years. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester for 53 years where he served in numerous capacities, including assistant scout master and treasurer of Boy Scout Troup 126. He was recently attending Trinity Lutheran Church of Vernon. He earned the CT Unsung Hero Award and CT Volunteer of the Year, both from the American Cancer Society. He was also honored with the Manchester Outstanding Community Service Award for more than 10 years of dedicated service to Meals on Wheels. He was very proud to have donated over 30 gallons of blood to the Red Cross. Don was an avid duck pin bowler and golfer. He spent many years traveling with Maude. He inherited his father's corny sense of humor and enjoyed playing cards with his siblings. He made and maintained many friendships and in his spare time, could often be found assembling another jigsaw puzzle or completing the crossword. Calling hours will be Sunday, December 17, 2017 from 2-5 p.m. at Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester. There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2017 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 60 Church Street, Manchester. Burial will follow in East Cemetery.
