David A.R. Trainer

June 17, 1942 — December 2, 2022

David A. R. Trainer, aged 80, of Manchester, CT passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. David was born in Glasgow, Scotland, UK on June 17, 1942. He was the son of Peter and Margaret (Cooper) Trainer. David grew up in Glasgow and graduated from Allan Glens School, a selective secondary school for boys, and later the Royal College of Science and Technology where he majored in Applied Mathematics and worked with early computers. He served in the British Army, 22nd Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment, primarily in the Middle East, and was a Soviet Weapons specialist. After, in 1971, he came to the United States, and his experience in computer science turned into a career as a computer programmer in several languages, and later as a computer technology and information storage and processing expert. In retirement, David studied bookbinding in England at the North Bennet Street Industrial Art School. He thoroughly enjoyed this hobby and volunteered for many years conserving books and manuscripts at the CT State Library. He was an avid collector of fine books in a myriad of subject matters. He was also an amateur locksmith and acquired an impressive collection of locks. David was a very good cook and especially enjoyed making exotic dishes, as well as cooking the odd specialty for his grandniece Hailey. Locally, David is survived by his wife Joyce Rizza Trainer with whom he shared 47 years; his son and daughter-in-law, John Rogers and Marianne Freschlin of Lebanon, CT; sister- and brother-in-law Janine Rizza and Donald Bourgoin, and nephew Steven Rizza of Manchester, CT; niece Angela (Rizza) and husband Jason Chapman, and very special grandniece Hailey Chapman of South Windsor, CT. David was a very good, patriotic man. He loved and served his country and his adopted home as well. He was a loving husband and a devoted father, uncle, and great uncle, and a good friend to many. He will be missed by all very much. Family and friends may call at Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main Street in Manchester, CT on Saturday, December 10, 2022 from 11:00am-12:00pm, followed by a brief service at 12:00pm.
