Clayton G. Sampson Jr., 82 of Ellington, CT, loving husband for forty-eight years of Nancy M. (McFarland) Sampson, died on his birthday, September 3, 2016 at home. Clay was born in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Clayton G. and Alice (Schoen) Sampson. He was raised in Brooklyn and upstate New York and enlisted in the Navy after graduating high school, serving during the Korean War. He then met and married Nancy, a D.O.D. teacher, while working as a sub-contractor for the Dept. of Defense in Ankara, Turkey. They returned to Manchester, CT in 1968 and moved to Ellington in 1974. Prior to retiring he was a technician and salesman in the electronics industry for many years, and was a longtime member of the National Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans and also St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Manchester. Clay discovered many interests including reading a variety of genres, rescuing pugs, playing multiple musical instruments, genealogy, new and old electronic gadgets, as well as volunteering for the Ellington Train Parish Band, and the New England Air Museum. His curiosity was boundless. With his wife, he is survived by three children, Sara Jane Gallo and her husband Chris of Kennesaw, GA, Grant Sampson and his wife Janeen of South Windsor, and Steven Sampson and his wife Cheryl of Virgin, UT; four grandchildren, Jack, Noah, Owen, and Desiray, three great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law Stanley McFarland and his wife Linda of Manchester, two brothers, a sister and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be celebrated on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 41 Park Street in Manchester. Burial with military honors will follow in Ellington Center Cemetery. A visiting time will be held at the church on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Book of Remembrance or to Pug Rescue of New England, PO Box 441667 West Somerville, MA 02144-1667.
