Claire Beatrice (Butler) Altrui, 69, of Vernon, died peacefully at Manchester Memorial Hospital on Monday, September 22, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Rehoboth, MA, on March 8, 1945, Claire was the daughter of the late Raymond and Bella (Hebert) Butler. She was raised in Windham and Chaplin and attended the Academy of the Holy Family High School in Baltic. In 1964, Claire went to work at Pratt and Whitney, where she met her husband, Salvatore D. Altrui. They married in 1969 and had three sons, who were her pride and joy. After raising her boys, Claire worked in the insurance sales and service industry. A few years after retiring, Claire found her true calling as a therapy dog handler for Allan's Angels of Bolton. With her beloved dogs, first Murphy and later Molly, she visited patients in hospitals and nursing homes. She was passionate about her pet therapy work and touched the lives of so many over the years. Claire and Sal were longtime residents of Manchester before moving to Vernon in 1999. They recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.
Claire is survived by her husband and two sons, Brian Altrui of New Britain and Jeffrey Altrui of Wethersfield. She also leaves her sister, Gloria Utley and her husband Tracy of North Windham, four nieces and a nephew. In addition to her parents, Claire was predeceased by her son, Scott Altrui of Farmington, and her brother, Richard Butler of Chaplin.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 27, starting at 9 am at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center Street, Manchester, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 am at St. Bartholomew's Church, 45 Ludlow Road, Manchester. Burial will follow at Valley Falls Cemetery in Vernon. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, September 26, from 5 to 8 pm.
